Berlusconi attacker found unfit for trial

MILAN — Italian news agencies say a Milan judge has ruled that the man who attacked Italian Premier Silvio Berlusconi is not fit to stand trial.

The ANSA and Apcom news agencies say Judge Luisa Savoia ruled on Tuesday that Massimo Tartaglia was not aware of his actions at the time of the attack and therefore cannot face trial. He must remain under observation for one year in a psychiatric hospital where he has been held since February.

Tartaglia was arrested and held after he hurled a souvenir statuette at the premier at the end of a pro-Berlusconi rally in Milan on Dec. 13. The attack left the 73-year-old premier with a broken nose and two broken teeth.

The 42-year-old Tartaglia has a history of psychological problems.
