Boeing to make 787 interiors in South Carolina

CHICAGO — Boeing Co. said on Thursday that it will make the interior for some of its new 787 airliners in North Charleston, S.C.

Boeing said it will buy land from Stone Mountain Industrial Park Inc. for the facility, which will be about 10 miles away from a 787 assembly operation in North Charleston. Terms of the deal were undisclosed.

Construction is expected to begin in the fourth quarter, and the plant should be running by early 2012, Boeing spokesman Tom Brabant said.

The new facility will make parts including stowage bins, closets, partitions, and crew rest areas. Boeing aims to deliver its first 787 by the end of this year, though it said on Thursday that the first delivery could slip into early 2011.

The new South Carolina plant will make interiors for the 787s assembled there, while a plant in Washington will continue to make interiors for 787s assembled there.

Boeing shares fell 38 cents to close at $64.37.
