Delaware offering assistance to Valero employees

DELAWARE CITY, Del. — State officials are helping people who are losing their jobs at the Delaware City Valero plant get information about training for new jobs and other benefits available to them.

The state has scheduled a meeting Monday morning at IBEW’s union hall in New Castle and another meeting Tuesday morning in Newark at the Plumber’s and Pipefitter’s Local office.

Gov. Jack Markell says the refinery workers helped make the state’s economy strong and now it’s time for Delaware to help them.

Valero Energy announced Friday it would close the refinery because of poor economic conditions and let all 550 workers go. The company tried to sell the refinery but found no buyers.
