Kan. regulators get more time for KC casino check
TOPEKA, Kan. — Kansas regulators now have until March 8 to finish a background check on the chosen developer of a state-owned casino in Kansas City, Kan.
Gov. Mark Parkinson set the new deadline at the request of the Racing and Gaming Commission. The commission’s original deadline was last week.
Commission spokesman Mike Deines said there’s no serious issue, just a need for more time.
The casino is to be built at Kansas Speedway, the Kansas City-area’s NASCAR track.
The track’s parent company, International Speedway Corp., is partners with Pennsylvania-based Penn National Gaming Inc. in the $521 million venture. They hope to open the casino early in 2012.
Their project was approved in December by a state casino selection board.
