Suntech posts $50M profit in 4th quarter

NEW YORK — Suntech Power Holdings Co. on Thursday said the company earned nearly $50 million in the fourth quarter after reducing expenses while boosting shipments of solar products to the U.S. The company posted a loss in the same period of 2008.

The Chinese solar company reported net income of $49.9 million, or 27 cents per American depositary share, for the final three months of 2009. That compares with a loss of $109 million, or 69 cents per ADS, a year earlier.

Analysts had expected earnings of 12 cents a share on revenue of $468.3 million, according to a survey by Thomson Reuters.

The company also expects to increase capital spending by about 40 percent to $200 million this year.
