Recalls this week: hockey sticks, rice and jackets

NEW YORK — Hockey sticks with too much lead in the paint, glass water bottles that can shatter and extension cords with too little coating are among the items posing a danger to consumers this week.

A few more of the usual suspects also surfaced — food items with possible salmonella contamination and childrens’ clothing items with hazardous drawstrings.

Here are this week’s recalls:

PRODUCT: DIETARY SUPPLEMENT

DETAILS: Natural Wellness, of Deerfield Beach, Fla., is recalling MasXtreme, lot number 911035, a supplement for increasing sexual performance distributed nationwide. It does not require a prescription.

WHY: It contains undeclared Aildenafil and Phentolamine. Aildenafil may interact with nitrates in some prescription drugs and may lower blood pressure to dangerous levels. Those with diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol or heart disease often take nitrates. Common side effects of Phentolamine include abnormal heart rhythm and rapid heart beat.

INCIDENTS: No illnesses linked to the product have been reported by the company.

PRODUCT: BARBECUE POTATO CHIPS

DETAILS: Lance Inc., of Charlotte, N.C., has recalled packages of Tom’s Barbecue Potato Chips with expiration dates through July 16. The recalled potato chips come in 1-ounce, 2.25-ounce and 8.5-ounce flexible packages. They were sold in retail stores nationwide.

WHY: They may be contaminated with salmonella, an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children and others with weakened immune systems.

INCIDENTS: The company has reported no illnesses to date

PRODUCT: CRAB SNACK & DIP SEASONING

DETAILS: Watkins Inc., of Winona, Minn., is recalling certain units of Crab Snack & Dip Seasoning in individual 4.6-ounce containers and 283 units of 0.9-ounce packages of Crab Snack & Dip Seasoning food. The recalled products were distributed nationwide through Watkins network of independent contractors, associates and through mail orders.

WHY: They have the potential to be contaminated with salmonella, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.

INCIDENTS: No illnesses have been reported to date.

HOW MANY: 306 units of individual 4.6-ounce containers and 283 units of 0.9-ounce packages.

PRODUCT: GLUTINO RAISIN BREAD

DETAILS: The Glutino Food Group, Lawrence, Mass., recalled 22.6-ounce bags of Glutino raisin bread, which was sold nationwide in the frozen food section of stores. They carry the Best Before 08OCT10 code.

WHY: They may contain eggs that are not listed in the ingredients, posing a risk for people with egg allergies.

INCIDENTS: None reported.

PRODUCT: ZATARAIN’S DIRTY RICE MIX

DETAILS: Zatarain’s, of Gretna, La., is recalled 8-ounce packages of Zatarain’s Original Dirty Rice Mix with the “best by” code date of Jan. 19 12H. It was distributed to limited grocery stores in Florida, Michigan and Virginia beginning Feb 15, 2010.

WHY: The rice mix contains wheat and barley ingredients not declared on the packaging. Those who have allergies to wheat or barley run the risk of serious or life threatening allergic reactions if they eat the product.

INCIDENTS: No illnesses or allergic reactions have been reported.

PRODUCT: SKI JACKETS FOR GIRLS

DETAILS: Lily, Rose and Daisy ski jackets for girls have been recalled. They were manufactured in Vietnam and imported by Sport Obermeyer Ltd., of Aspen, Colo. The jackets were sold in boutiques and by ski and sports stores between July 2009 and February 2010.

WHY: They have drawstrings through the waist that could trap young children.

INCIDENTS: No injuries reported

PRODUCT: HOODED JACKETS AND REVERSIBLE VESTS

DETAILS: Hooded jackets and reversible vests distributed by North-Sportif Inc., of New York, and made in China have been recalled. They were sold at Burlington Coat Factory stores nationwide from October 2002 through January 2010.

WHY: The jackets have a drawstring through the hood and the vests have a drawstring through the waist which can pose strangulation and entanglement hazards to young children.

INCIDENTS: No injuries have been reported

PRODUCT: HEATED JACKETS AND VESTS

DETAILS: Heated jackets and vests imported by Ardica Technologies of San Francisco. The recalled items were made in China and have Moshi Power Systems to heat them. They were sold at sporting goods and outdoor equipment retailers from August 2009 through February 2010.

WHY: Electrical connections in the products’ warming components can overheat, posing a burn hazard.

INCIDENTS: The company received five reports of overheating. No injuries were reported.

PRODUCT: GLASS WATER BOTTLES

DETAILS: Crate & Barrel recalled 22-ounce and 50-ounce glass water bottles sold at stores, in the store’s catalog and online between December 2008 and February 2010. They have a SKU number of 437-151 and 437-169. They can be returned for a refund.

WHY: They may shatter and cause injuries when removing or inserting the stopper.

INCIDENTS: There have been seven reports of shattering glass and four reports of hand injuries after consumers tried to insert or remove a stopper at the top.

PRODUCT: YOUTH AND JUNIOR HOCKEY STICKS

DETAILS: Bauer Hockey Inc., of Greenland, N.H., has recalled youth and junior hockey sticks made in China and sold at sporting goods stores nationwide from February 2005 through March 2010. They come in various shapes, sizes and colors. The name Bauer and the model descriptions are on all the sticks, shafts and blades. Most of the sticks have the Nike symbol.

WHY: Paint and decals on the products have high levels of lead, which is toxic to young children if they ingest it.

INCIDENTS: No illnesses or injuries have been reported.

PRODUCT: CHROME SHELVING UNITS

DETAILS: King Long Metal Industrial Company, Ltd., of Trumbull, Conn., recalled chrome shelving units made in China and sold at Costco Wholesale Club locations nationwide from December 2009 through January 2010.

WHY: Casters can break at the stem, causing the shelving unit to collapse or fall, posing an injury hazard.

INCIDENTS: There has been one reported incident and no injuries.

PRODUCT: EXTENSION CORDS AND POWER STRIPS

DETAILS: Howard Berger Co. Inc. of Cranbury, N.J., has recalled heavy duty outdoor extension cords and indoor household extension cords and power strips carrying the Brightway brand. They were sold at hardware and discount stores between August and October 2009. The outdoor extension cords bear model numbers R2600 through R2615 while the indoor cords have model numbers EE6 through EE20. Powers strips have the MP6DG model number. They should be returned to the store they were purchased for a refund.

WHY: They could have inadequate coating material and too-small copper conductors.

INCIDENTS: No injuries have been reported.
